Over the Moon
The Moon Festival or the Mooncake Festival is one of the largest celebrations in Asian culture.
The Greater Cincinnati Chinese Cultural Exchange Association (GCCCEA) and the Cincinnati USA Convention and Visitors Bureau, through its Vibe Cincinnati platform, are excited to present the 2021 Cincinnati Moon Festival on Fountain Square on Saturday, Oct, 2, from 3 to 7 p.m.
“It's very important to create this platform for the Asian community to engage other communities and allow for an opportunity for residents in the region to understand Asian culture and the local Asian community,” says Felicity Tao, chair of the Greater Cincinnati Chinese Cultural Exchange Association. “It's extremely important to the Asian community to feel they belong and they can contribute to the cultural fabric of this region. Simply put, we want to be seen, understood and embraced.
Traditionally held in September or early October on the Gregorian calendar, the Moon Festival, also called the Mid-Autumn Festival, is a time for families to gather for dinners, light paper lanterns, and eat mooncakes.
“We have many family and kid-friendly activities such as paint a lantern, paper umbrella, or a fan,” says Tao. “They will also have an opportunity to sample moon cakes and taste authentic Asian street food and bubble tea!”
This year’s celebration on Fountain Square features expanded cultural immersion experiences and more diverse performances. Families with children can choose a variety of interactive activities, visit many DIY booths, and pick up exquisite souvenirs. Visitors will also enjoy authentic Asian food and a lantern display.
“This event combines cultural celebration, family-oriented activities, food, and performing arts into one rich experience,” says Tao. “It’s a great opportunity for people who are interested in experiencing a different culture and having a cultural dialogue with the Asian community.”
