The event began in 1991, when then Mayor Thomas Guidugli and Commissioner Jerry Peluso saw a need for the community to celebrate the region’s rich cultural history and reflect the pride that Newport citizens have for their community. That commitment evolved into the the annual Italianfest.

The city-sponsored event is produced by a core of dedicated volunteers. Over the years, Italianfest has evolved from a small event with five food vendors and 5,000 visitors into one of the region's liveliest, family-oriented festivals nThis year, more tha n120,000 visitors are expected to attend.
