Rise Above

This week, John Preston, a Cincinnati-born and Northern Kentucky-raised marine/firefighter, unveiled his latest music video, Rise.

The release comes on the heels of a transformative year for Preston, who completed an awe-inspiring 704-mile hike that concluded at Cincinnati’s Paycor Stadium in December 2023 in honor of his brother and other first responders who’ve lost their lives to Post Traumatic Stress.

Following this milestone, Preston returned to California, where he signed with Lobel Music Group, solidifying his commitment to harnessing the power of music to inspire his brothers and sisters in the veteran and first responder communities.

Rise, described by Preston as “an anthem for the overlooked,” blends Hollywood-level storytelling with archival footage chronicling his 20-year journey in the music industry spotlighting his passion for propping up those who serve.

As Preston returned home from Iraq in 2004, he was so immersed in his own depression, drinking and post traumatic stress, he missed the magnitude of the struggle his brother, fellow veteran and police officer in Northern Kentucky, also faced. Michael took his life in 2016, leaving Preston gripped with pain and a deepened determination to save the heroes of other families.

Rise is more than a song; it’s a tribute to resilience and a call to action for those who feel unseen,” said Preston.

 A Visionary Collaboration

Directed by filmmaker Paul Sadowski of Full Range Films, the video reflects the deeply personal journey of Preston. Sadowski, who worked with Preston on his 2023 documentary, shared his creative vision:

“In the visual story of Rise, we wanted to capture the power of witnessing your own future through the innocent eyes of a child, all the way to the present day,” said Sadowski. “Seeing what John has been through – from Iraq to becoming a firefighter, to committing to marriage and fatherhood, to now – presented an opportunity to tell a complete but open-ended journey that complements this powerful, amazing song.”

A Star-Studded Partnership

The video features styling from MUNICIPAL clothing, owned by Mark Wahlberg. Wahlberg’s brand has partnered with Preston to amplify the release through social media campaigns and star-studded support, highlighting the artist’s relentless drive and dedication.

A Family Affair

Adding a heartfelt layer, Rise marks the debut of Preston’s children, John Thomas (15) and Eleanor (3), who portray younger versions of him. Set in a warehouse filled with old televisions, the video weaves a nostalgic and emotional narrative of life’s passage through their eyes.

“It started with the last hike and shooting the documentary, but it has been such an incredible experience to watch my family take part in what has become a dream life we’ve been fortunate enough to create,” Preston said. “We want to see every veteran and first responder rise to a life of purpose and fulfillment.”

Honoring the Past, Shining Light on the Future

The video also features stunning visuals of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, captured during the final days of Preston’s Carry the Weight hike. The hike was part of a documentary series aimed at raising awareness about veteran and first responder suicide, a cause close to Preston’s heart following the loss of his brother Michael, a Newport Police officer who died by suicide in 2016. The hike drew tremendous local support, with veterans, first responders, and community members joining Preston on his journey.

Preston is a musician, U.S. Marine Corps veteran, and firefighter who uses his platform to inspire and advocate for veterans, first responders, and their families. Through his music and storytelling, Preston has become a beacon of hope, showing that perseverance and passion can overcome even the greatest obstacles.
